Does SmartHeart replace our cardiac monitor or AED?
No. SmartHeart is a 12-lead EKG capture and transmission system. It does not provide defibrillation, pacing, continuous monitoring, or resuscitation, and it is not a substitute for EMS activation, CPR, or an AED. It puts a diagnostic 12-lead on units that don't carry a monitor, and gives ALS teams a lightweight second pathway for fast acquisition and review.
Who can operate it — do BLS crews need certification?
Any responder, ALS or BLS, can capture the tracing. No specialized EKG-acquisition certification is required, subject to your local competency requirements and protocols. The app guides placement and checks every electrode before recording, and a full training curriculum ships with every deployment.
Who reads the EKG?
Trained ALS-level personnel can read it on the device immediately. The same tracing transmits to your agency's medical director, online or county medical control, or the receiving hospital, where your own physicians read it directly. An optional 24/7 telehealth preliminary read and an on-demand US board-certified cardiologist over-read ($34) are available whenever you want them.
Can we keep all readings in-house?
Yes. The connection to the 24/7 telehealth center can be switched off entirely. Every tracing is then routed only to the clinicians you choose — your EMS medical director or online medical control.
What happens when there's no signal?
The EKG records on-device with no connection required and transmits for interpretation the moment a link returns. The file is small enough to move over cellular, Wi-Fi, and low-bandwidth links.
How does SmartHeart capture a 12-lead?
SmartHeart® combines a wearable electrode belt with three body-contact electrodes. Six electrodes integrated into the belt record the precordial leads (V1–V6). Three body-contact electrodes — under each arm and at the waist — capture the limb signals: leads I and II are recorded directly, while III, aVR, aVL and aVF are derived using standard 12-lead methodology. The complete tracing is sent via Bluetooth to the SmartHeart app for immediate review.
Is patient data secure? What will our IT and legal teams need?
No patient data is stored on the device, app, or phone. Bluetooth and app-to-cloud transport are both encrypted, and data is processed and held in AWS in the United States. The platform is ISO 27001 and ISO 27799 certified, the device is ISO 13485 certified, and data handling is HIPAA-aligned. A structured written response for municipal IT, legal, and data-handling diligence is available on request.
Are there per-capture fees or consumables?
No activation fee, no per-capture charge, and no consumables — the belt cleans with rubbing alcohol and runs about 100 EKGs on two AAA lithium batteries. Choose the $129/month plan or the $1,295 device purchase plus $500/year platform access. Cardiologist over-reads are optional at $34 each.
